Summer vs. Winter Hair Care: Rochester Survival Guide

Navigating the Rochester Seasons: Your Hair’s Best Friend

If you live in Rochester, you know that our weather is anything but consistent. We go from humid, lakeside summers at Ontario Beach Park to bone-chilling, snowy winters in the span of a few months. While we adapt our wardrobes from sundresses to parkas, many of us forget that our hair needs a seasonal wardrobe change, too.

As a stylist here in Rochester, I see firsthand how the Great Lakes climate affects different hair textures. Whether you’re dealing with summer frizz or winter static, I’m here to help you navigate the shift. Let’s break down how to transition your hair care routine to stay gorgeous year-round.

Summer Hair Care: Fighting Humidity and UV Rays

When July hits and the humidity levels rise in Upstate NY, hair tends to do one of two things: it either poofs into a cloud of frizz or falls completely flat. Plus, the sun’s rays can be just as damaging to your hair as they are to your skin.

1. Hydrate to Combat Frizz

Frizz is essentially your hair reaching out into the air to find moisture. If you keep your hair hydrated from the inside out, it won’t need to "swell" when you step outside. I always recommend a lightweight leave-in conditioner during the summer months to create a barrier against that Rochester humidity.

2. UV Protection is Key

Did you know your hair color can fade just from sitting out at a Red Wings game? Sun exposure acts like a mild bleach. Look for hair products that contain UV filters, or wear a stylish wide-brimmed hat if you’re spending the day at the Public Market.

3. The Post-Pool Rinse

If you’re spending time in the Finger Lakes or a chlorine pool, always rinse your hair with fresh water before and after swimming. Wetting your hair with clean water first prevents it from soaking up as much salt or chemicals.

Winter Hair Care: Beating the "Big Freeze"

Once the snow starts falling on East Avenue, the challenges flip. Indoor heating and freezing outdoor temperatures strip the moisture right out of your strands, leading to breakage and that dreaded winter static.

1. Swap to a Richer Mask

In the winter, your standard conditioner might not be enough. I suggest my clients swap their regular conditioner for a deep-conditioning mask at least once a week. This replaces the lipids lost to dry indoor heat.

2. Turn Down the Heat (In the Shower!)

I know it’s tempting to take a steaming hot shower when it’s 20 degrees outside, but hot water strips the natural oils from your scalp and hair. Try rinsing with lukewarm water to keep your cuticle closed and your shine intact.

3. Static Control

That "hat hair" static is caused by a lack of moisture. A tiny drop of hair oil smoothed over your ends after you take off your beanie can work wonders. Pro tip: You can even lightly mist a wooden hairbrush with a bit of static-control spray before brushing.

The Year-Round Essential: Regular Trims

Regardless of the season, the best way to keep your hair healthy is a regular maintenance schedule. Whether it's removing sun-damaged ends in September or brittle, dry ends in March, a quick trim keeps your style looking intentional and fresh.

As your stylist, my goal is to make sure your hair looks just as good at a snowy holiday party as it does at a summer backyard BBQ. If you’re feeling like the Rochester weather is getting the best of your tresses, come see me! We can customize a product routine specifically for your hair type and the current forecast.
