Protecting Your Hair from Rochester Winter Weather

Don’t let the Lake Ontario winds ruin your locks. Expert tips from Michelle Doyle on keeping your hair hydrated and healthy all winter long.

Protecting Your Hair from Rochester Winter Weather

Beating the Rochester Chill: Your Guide to Winter Hair Health

If you live in Rochester, you know that winter isn't just a season—it’s a lifestyle. Between the biting winds coming off Lake Ontario and the dry, artificial heat pumping through our homes in neighborhoods from Brighton to Irondequoit, our hair takes a serious beating this time of year.

Hi, I’m Michelle Doyle, and I’ve spent years helping my clients navigate the specific challenges of Upstate New York weather. When the temperature drops, the moisture in the air vanishes, leaving your hair prone to static, breakage, and dullness. But don't worry—you don't have to hide under a beanie until May.

Here is my professional guide to keeping your hair radiant and resilient through the Rochester thaw.

Hydration is Your Best Friend

Just as you swap your light summer moisturizer for a heavier cream, your hair needs a seasonal upgrade. The combination of freezing outdoor air and dry indoor heating strips the hair shaft of its natural oils.

I always recommend my clients switch to a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner as soon as the first frost hits. Look for ingredients like shea butter, argan oil, or jojoba oil. Once a week, treat yourself to a deep conditioning mask. If you’re coming in for a cut or color, ask me about a professional-grade conditioning treatment to give your hair that extra boost of hydration it craves.

The Battle Against Static

Is there anything more frustrating than your hair standing on end the moment you take off your scarf? Static is caused by a lack of moisture and the friction of winter fabrics like wool and polyester.

Michelle’s Pro Tip: Keep a small bottle of hair oil or a leave-in conditioner in your purse. A tiny drop smoothed over your ends can kill static instantly. Also, consider switching to a silk or satin-lined winter hat. It protects your style and prevents the friction that leads to both static and the dreaded "hat hair."

Wash Less, Protect More

In the summer, we might wash our hair daily to get rid of sweat and humidity. In a Rochester winter, that’s a recipe for disaster. Over-washing strips away the sebum that protects your scalp and hair from the elements.

Try to stretch your washes to 2–3 times a week. On the days you do wash, make sure your hair is 100% dry before leaving the house. We’ve all heard the old wives' tale about catching a cold, but from a stylist’s perspective, the danger is mechanical: water expands when it freezes. If you go outside with damp hair, the water molecules inside the hair shaft can freeze and expand, leading to severe breakage.

Don't Forget the Trim

It might seem counterintuitive to cut your hair when you’re trying to grow it out for summer, but winter is when your ends are most fragile. The dry air makes ends split faster, and those splits can travel up the hair shaft if not addressed.

I recommend a seasonal "dusting"—a light trim to remove the dry, brittle tips without sacrificing your length. It keeps your hair looking thick and healthy even on the greyest Rochester days.

Protect Your Color

Winter dullness is real. Whether you’re rocking a deep espresso or a bright Rochester-winter blonde, the lack of humidity can make your color look flat. Using a heat protectant is non-negotiable this time of year, especially if you’re using curling irons to combat the flatness caused by heavy winter coats and scarves.

Book Your Winter Recovery Session

Your hair doesn't have to suffer just because the thermometer is in the teens. Whether you need a deep moisture infusion, a fresh cut to remove winter damage, or a color refresh to brighten your mood, I’m here to help.
