Discover how to embrace your natural texture with Michelle Doyle’s expert curly hair tips for hydration, definition, and frizz-free styling.

Embracing the Bounce: A Guide to Curly Hair Care
If you have curly hair, you know that your locks have a personality of their own. Some days they are bouncy and defined; other days, the Rochester humidity—especially during our lakeside summers—can turn a great look into a frizzy challenge.
I’m Michelle Doyle, and as a stylist here in Rochester, NY, I’ve spent years helping women fall back in love with their natural texture. Curly hair is beautiful, but it requires a specialized approach to hydration and styling. If you’ve been struggling with dryness or lack of definition, this guide is for you.
The Golden Rule: Moisture is Everything
Curly hair is naturally drier than straight hair because the scalp's natural oils have a harder time traveling down the coiled hair shaft. This is why the foundation of any curly routine is moisture.
In my chair, I always recommend looking for sulfate-free shampoos. Sulfates are harsh detergents that strip away the very moisture your curls need to stay grouped together. When you condition, don't be afraid to use a generous amount. In fact, many of my clients find success with the "squish to condish" method—scrunching water and conditioner into the hair while it’s soaking wet to drive that hydration deep into the cuticle.
Styling Techniques for Definition
How you apply your products is just as important as the products themselves. Here are three professional techniques I recommend for different curl types:
1. The Raking Method: Best for thicker, tighter curls. Apply your product (like a curl cream or leave-in) by raking it through with your fingers to ensure every strand is coated, then shake the hair at the root to let the curls find their natural pattern. 2. Praying Hands: If you struggle with frizz, try this. Rub the product between your palms and smooth your hands down the length of your hair as if you are praying. This flattens the cuticle and reduces halo frizz. 3. Scrunching: Essential for wavy and loose curl patterns. Once your product is applied, cup your hair in your hands and squeeze upward toward the scalp to encourage the curl to form.
Drying Your Curls in the 585
We all know that Rochester weather can be unpredictable. Whether it’s a damp morning near Lake Ontario or a snowy afternoon downtown, how you dry your hair matters.
The Diffuser is Your Best Friend: If you’re short on time, use a blow dryer with a diffuser attachment. This disperses the airflow so it doesn't disrupt your curl pattern. Pro tip: Keep the heat low and try not to touch your curls until they are at least 80% dry. Touching wet curls is the fastest way to create frizz!
Plunking: If you prefer to air dry, try "plopping" or "plunking" your hair into a microfiber towel or an old cotton T-shirt. This absorbs excess water without ruffling the hair cuticle like a traditional terry cloth towel would.
Maintenance and Professional Trims
One of the biggest mistakes curly girls make is waiting too long between haircuts. Because curly hair doesn't show length as quickly as straight hair, you might think you can skip your appointments. However, split ends can travel up the hair shaft, causing tangles and dullness.
Regular "dustings" or curl-specific cuts help maintain the shape of your style. Whether you prefer a stacked bob or long, cascading layers, the right cut prevents the dreaded "triangle head" and ensures your curls have the movement they deserve.
