Healthy Hair Habits for Stronger Strands | Michelle Doyle

Your Journey to Stronger, Healthier Hair Starts Here

We’ve all been there: looking in the mirror and wishing our hair had a bit more life, shine, and—most importantly—strength. Whether you’re dealing with the harsh Rochester winters that strip moisture from your strands or the humidity of a lakeside summer, maintaining strong hair is a year-round commitment.

As a stylist here in Rochester, NY, I’ve spent years helping my clients move beyond quick fixes to build sustainable hair health. Strong hair isn’t just about the products you use once a week; it’s about the small, daily habits that protect your hair’s integrity from the inside out.

1. Handle with Care: The Wet Hair Rule

Did you know that hair is at its most vulnerable when it’s wet? When your hair is saturated with water, the shaft stretches and becomes much more prone to snapping. One of the most common mistakes I see in the salon is aggressive towel-drying or brushing immediately after a shower.

Michelle’s Tip: Swap your heavy cotton bath towel for a microfiber hair wrap or even an old soft t-shirt. Instead of rubbing, gently squeeze the moisture out. When detangling, always use a wide-tooth comb or a dedicated detangling brush, starting from the ends and working your way up to the roots.

2. Master the Art of the Low-Heat Style

I love a sleek blowout as much as anyone, but constant high heat is the fastest way to weaken your hair’s protein bonds. If you can’t live without your flat iron or curling wand, your best defense is a high-quality heat protectant.

In my chair, I always emphasize that "less is more" when it comes to temperature. You don’t need the highest setting to get results. Try air-drying your hair halfway before finishing with a blow dryer to minimize heat exposure.

3. Scalp Health is Hair Health

Think of your scalp as the soil and your hair as the garden. If the soil isn’t nourished, the plants won’t grow strong. A healthy scalp should be free of buildup, excess oil, and irritation.

In Rochester, our hard water can often leave mineral deposits on the scalp and hair, making it feel brittle. I recommend incorporating a scalp massage into your routine to stimulate blood flow, and once a month, use a clarifying treatment or a scalp scrub to reset your "soil."

4. The Power of Protective Styling

How you wear your hair when you're sleeping or running errands at Pittsford Plaza matters! Tight ponytails and thin elastic bands cause "mechanical breakage," which usually shows up as those annoying short flyaways around your hairline.

The Solution: Use silk or satin scrunchies instead of rubber elastics. If you have long hair, consider a loose braid at night to prevent tangling. Sleeping on a silk pillowcase is another game-changer—it reduces friction, meaning you wake up with fewer knots and more shine.

5. Regular Trims are Non-Negotiable

It might sound counterintuitive to cut your hair when you’re trying to grow it stronger, but regular trims are essential. Once a split end starts, it will continue to travel up the hair shaft, weakening the entire strand as it goes.

By visiting me for a light "dusting" or trim every 8 to 12 weeks, we can catch those splits before they cause real damage. This keeps your ends looking thick and healthy, rather than thin and wispy.

6. Hydration from the Inside Out

Finally, remember that your hair reflects your overall health. Drinking plenty of water and eating a diet rich in biotin, zinc, and omega-3 fatty acids provides the building blocks for strong keratin production.
