Hair Extensions: Everything You Need to Know
Discover the secret to instant length and volume. Michelle Doyle shares everything you need to know about professional hair extensions in Rochester.

Your Guide to Dream Hair: Everything You Need to Know About Extensions
Have you ever scrolled through Instagram and wondered how everyone seems to have perfectly thick, waist-length waves? While a great vitamin routine helps, the secret for many women—including many of my clients right here in Rochester—is high-quality hair extensions.
I’m Michelle Doyle, and throughout my years behind the chair, I’ve seen firsthand how extensions can do more than just add length; they can completely transform a woman’s confidence. Whether you’re looking to add volume to fine hair, length for a special event, or even a pop of color without the chemicals, extensions are a game-changer.
Why Consider Hair Extensions?
Most people think extensions are only for those who want hair down to their waist. In reality, extensions are incredibly versatile. Many of my clients choose them for:
The Methods: Which is Right for You?
Not all extensions are created equal. During a consultation, I look at your hair’s texture, your lifestyle (how often you hit the gym or visit Lake Ontario in the summer!), and your hair goals.
Hand-Tied Wefts
This is one of my favorite methods for a seamless, natural look. The hair is thin and flexible, laying flat against the scalp. It’s excellent for Rochester’s humid summers because they stay comfortable and hidden even in high ponytails.
Tape-Ins
Great for those with finer hair, tape-ins distribute the weight over a wider area of the hair shaft. They are quick to install and very comfortable for daily wear.
K-Tips (Keratin Bond)
For maximum 360-degree movement, K-tips are individual strands fused to your hair. These are the most discreet option and are perfect for those who want total styling freedom.
Maintenance: Keeping Your Glow in Rochester
Living in Western New York means our hair deals with a lot—from the dry heat of our furnaces in February to the humidity of July. Extension hair is an investment, and it requires a little extra love to keep it looking fresh.
1. Brush Regularly: Use a specialized extension brush and always start from the ends, working your way up. Brushing twice a day prevents matting near the attachment points. 2. Product Matters: Use sulfate-free, professional-grade shampoos. I always recommend avoiding products with heavy oils near the bonds or tapes, as this can cause them to slip. 3. The Sleep Routine: Never go to bed with wet hair! This is the golden rule of extensions. Gently braid your hair or put it in a low ponytail to prevent tangling overnight. 4. Professional Move-Ups: Depending on the method, you’ll need to see me every 6 to 10 weeks to have your extensions moved up as your natural hair grows.
The Michelle Doyle Experience
Choosing hair extensions is a big decision. I pride myself on providing a personalized experience that prioritizes the health of your natural hair. We start with a detailed consultation where we talk about your daily routine—whether you're grabbing coffee at Glen Edith or heading to a gala at the Eastman Museum—to ensure your new hair fits your lifestyle perfectly.
I meticulously color-match your extensions to your existing shade (or your new desired shade) to ensure that the only thing people notice is how great your hair looks—not where it starts and ends.
