Curls Revived: Your Guide to Curly Hair Care
Discover the best techniques for managing and styling curly hair in Rochester, NY with expert advice from Michelle Doyle.

Embracing Your Natural Texture in Rochester
If you have curly hair, you know that your locks have a personality of their own. From tight coils to soft beachy waves, curls are beautiful, unique, and—let’s be honest—sometimes a little temperamental. Between the lake-effect humidity we experience here in Rochester and the dry indoor heat during our long winters, maintaining the perfect curl can feel like a full-time job.
I’m Michelle Doyle, and throughout my years behind the chair, I’ve helped countless clients fall back in love with their natural texture. Today, I’m sharing the professional secrets to keeping your curls hydrated, defined, and frizz-free.
It All Starts with Hydration
The golden rule of curly hair is simple: Moisture is everything. Unlike straight hair, the natural oils from your scalp have a harder time traveling down the coiled hair shaft. This makes curly hair naturally prone to dryness and frizz.
To combat this, I always recommend a sulfate-free shampoo. Sulfates are harsh detergents that strip away the moisture your curls crave. When you visit me for a refresh, we often talk about "co-washing" or using cream-based cleansers that hydrate while they clean.
Pro Tip: Never skip the conditioner! In fact, try "squishing to condish." While your hair is soaking wet and saturated with conditioner, scrunch your hair upward toward your scalp. This helps force the moisture deep into the hair cuticle.
The Art of Styling: The "Praying Hands" Method
How you apply your products is just as important as what products you use. One mistake I often see is rubbing products into the hair, which breaks up the curl pattern and creates instant frizz. Instead, try these professional techniques:
1. Work with Soaking Wet Hair: Apply your leave-in conditioner and gel while you’re still in the shower. This locks in the water molecules. 2. Praying Hands: Rub the product between your palms and smooth your hands down the length of your hair as if you are praying. This coats the curls without disrupting their natural grouping. 3. Scrunching: After the product is applied, gently scrunch upward to encourage the curl to form.
Drying Without the Frizz
In Rochester, we don't always have the luxury of air-drying (especially during those snowy February mornings!). If you must use a hair dryer, a diffuser attachment is your best friend.
Keep the heat on a medium or low setting and avoid moving the dryer too much. Tilt your head to the side or upside down, resting the curls in the diffuser bowl. This provides lift at the roots and maintains the integrity of the curl shape. If you prefer to towel dry, swap your traditional terry cloth towel for an old cotton T-shirt or a microfiber towel to prevent breakage.
Refreshing Your Curls on Non-Wash Days
You don’t need to wash your hair every day to look polished. To revive “second-day” curls, I recommend a simple misting bottle filled with water and a tiny bit of leave-in conditioner. Lightly spray your hair and gently scrunch. This reactsivate the products already in your hair and tames any flyaways caused by your pillowcase.
Speaking of pillows—switching to a silk or satin pillowcase is a game-changer for my Rochester clients. It reduces friction, meaning you wake up with fewer tangles and more definition.
Let’s Perfect Your Curls Together
Every curl pattern is different, and what works for one person might not work for another. That’s why a personalized consultation is so important. Whether you’re looking for a dry-cutting technique to give your curls better shape or you need a product recommendation that can withstand an afternoon at High Falls, I’m here to help.
