Best Hairstyles for Your Face Shape: Oval, Round, & Heart

Finding the perfect haircut is more than just following the latest Pinterest trends; it’s about understanding the unique geometry of your face. A great haircut acts like a custom frame for a beautiful painting—it should highlight your best features while softening others.

As a stylist here in Rochester, I’ve spent years helping women discover the confidence that comes with a tailored cut. Whether you’re grabbing a latte at Java’s or heading to a night out at the Smith Opera House, you want a look that feels authentically you. Today, we’re breaking down the best styles for the three most common face shapes: Oval, Round, and Heart.

The Versatile Oval Face Shape

If you have an oval face shape, consider yourself a bit of a hair chameleon! Oval faces are characterized by being slightly longer than they are wide, with a jawline that is narrower than the cheekbones. Because this shape is naturally balanced, almost any style works.

Michelle’s Professional Tip: While you can pull off almost anything, I love seeing oval faces in a long, blunt bob or a classic center part with long waves. These styles emphasize your natural symmetry. If you want to go short, a textured pixie cut looks incredibly chic on an oval frame.

What to avoid: Try to avoid styles that are overly long and heavy in the front, as they can hide your features and make your face appear longer than it is.

The Soft Curves of a Round Face Shape

Round faces are typically as wide as they are long, with soft features and a more rounded chin. The goal with a round face is to create the illusion of length and definition.

Michelle’s Professional Tip: Long layers are your best friend. They draw the eye downward, creating a lengthening effect. If you prefer a shorter look, go for a long bob (the "lob") that hits a few inches below the chin. This creates a vertical line that slims the face.

When we chat during your consultation at the salon, I often recommend side-swept bangs. They break up the width of the forehead and add an angular element to your look.

What to avoid: Chin-length bobs or heavy, straight-across bangs can emphasize the roundness of the face, making it look wider.

The Sweet Symmetry of a Heart Face Shape

Heart-shaped faces are wider at the forehead and temples, tapering down to a narrow, often pointed chin. This shape is incredibly striking, and the right cut can balance the width of the forehead with the narrowness of the jaw.

Michelle’s Professional Tip: To balance a heart-shaped face, we want to create volume around the bottom half of your face. Shoulder-length cuts with textured ends or deep side parts work beautifully. A side part shifts the focus away from the width of the forehead.

If you love fringe, wispy, curtain bangs are a fantastic choice for you. They soften the forehead without closing off the face entirely.

What to avoid: High, slicked-back ponytails or short, choppy layers at the crown can make the top of the head appear even wider while leaving the chin area looking too thin.
